This an area we have not discussed. Arty was a BIG factor during the war. Mortars can simulate that arty fire. Almost every action of going over the top was presided by arty fire. Once the shelling stopped you know the enemy was coming. Both sound and BB's can be used for this. I would suggest this just for the realisum as calling a hit by using it is pointless. This is going to be my winter project.

I say that throughout no-man's land we make air mortars (Cone shaped CO2 charges with rubber used in Movies for explosions) and scatter them about for more realism. Each side could have 5 arty strikes per game. Call it in, and a certain amount of mortars will be set off with remote controls in the rear (where the real artillery would be)

Try to use this as a rule of thumb. Would you like to be hit by anything like that. My answer is NO, I would rather be pelleted by BB's. We are trying to have fun for ALL. So think about a way to shoot BB's through the mortar. Our helmets offer us some protection and you can hear when BB's hit them. There is an item that we can use, just modifiy the delievery system. The M79 grenade launcher and it's rounds.

I really dont think itll be that bad getting hit by one. You would be able to put whatever in the launch tube, bbs, oranges, ect. So we would have a large variety of things to launch.

Unless you have been hit by any of these things you really can't say! I have been involved in snooping & pooping in the woods for over 25 years and have seen it all. When you have been there then you can say!

Where did you serve. Nam? Cosovo? Just interested. And the tennis ball cannon wont be like a cannon. It would be a mortar. One guy made one on the ww2aa forum. If we all wear helmets we wont have to wory about getting hit on the head.

i had a thought just now, couldn't we make a round that would spray BB's every where on impact? my idea is to take a pvc tube a little bit wider than a toilet paper roll, drill uniform 6mm holes running up and down it, match some 6mm tubes up with the holes, load springs in the tubes and BBs after that, have one tube running up the center also with a spring in it, then put a tail with fins on the mortar round, and from the tail a copper pipe, about 3/4s the diameter of the external PVC pipe wound run down the inside of it, to hold the BB's and the springs back, then on the nose have something to set off the spring which would send the tail off (which would be connected to the inner copper pipe) and that in turn would give the BB's a shrapnel affect, the tail would ensure that the round always lands nose first, and the holes on the side would make the round whistle as it flew, giving it a nice incoming warning, i'll get a diagram of this up when i get on a better computer

Now your talking! That sounds great! I had the same idea only an air burst just above the enemy trench. I'm sure you have seen the model rockets and know how they work. They have a delayed charge that deploys the parachute. We would use that to create the air burst of BB's over the trench. SHRAPNEL!!!

A guy at the field is making a rpg with rocket engines and cardboard tube. They work great he said and you get a spread of about 20 ft and it works just not field tested.

This is why I keep pushing the idea of using only BB's, this is airsoft!

if u r trying to make it realistic thet will be very hard as the mortars rounds protruded out the top.An idea for ammunition idea would be several no wait loads of bbs wrapped tightly in a thin layer of cling film.It would not be painful if it hit someone and would allow for an alright spray

It's a good idea! Give it a try. I was trying to think of a delievery system and how the rounds would be made. So far we have some excellent ideas. We could combine some of them to achive the results.
