Here is a quick usable gun for in the trenchs. I used a M50A police riot shotgun and modified it. Not a pretty gun for display but one you can bang around in the trenchs. Attachments:

That looks good. A darker stain would make it look even better.

If you think about it that dark color is due to age. What did it look like when it was issued to the troops? Brand new! So is the same with the uniforms, gear and equipment. That is why repro is so important to have. Now we can portary it correctly! Only WW2 Marines were issued Great War stuff, used!

What I have represents the Winchester 1897. That was the issue shotgun. The history on it's use is very interesting and I encourage all to read about it. This new fanage contraption the computer can tell you all about it. US troops were using the M97 as early as the Phillipine actions in 1898.

Oh. I see. It looked as though it was a hammerless M12 which I'm sure was also used in WWI if I'm not mistaken.

Your right, but many more 97's were in use. The only place I have seen the 12's were in the Navy. Then again I'm sure some place there is an odd photo showing it being used else where. Remember we are trying to portray the average soldier, so it would be what was seen more of. Unfortunetly sometimes we can not always get what was used the most of, like the Enfields or Eddystones (P17). Best way is to look for what was used the most of and try to copy that.

I see. I was just pointing out that it could work for an M12 as well. Very nice! Original bayonet lug?

Mine does look more like the 12. It's great for in the field because it is used just like the basic rifle. It gives a feel for that time period. Trench raids in the future would be very interesting with this weapon. It may not have the distance or punch in firepower but we are doing the Great War.
