Some of our guys are also part of the WWIIAS group, so you may want to check out that site as well, for the info on gun conversions.

The Lee Enfield was used by the US? This is an area of confusion for many. There were three Enfields used in the war: the No.1 Mk. III, the classic British rifle, the Pattern 14 Enfield, which was a British design based on the Mauser. The original, the Pattern 13, with a new cartridge, was intended to replace the No. 1, but when the war started the Brits changed the caliber to .303 and called it the Pattern 14. Pattern 14's were manufactured on contract by Winchester, Remington and Eddystone. When the US entered the war we didn't have the production facilities to mass produce Springfields, so the Pattern 14 was adapted to the .30-06 cartridge and called the Model 1917 Enfield. More American troops were armed with M1917 Enfields than Springfields, including Sgt. York, though there are stories that York did a midnight requisition and got himself a Springfield. To confuse things further, some American troops sent to help the British and Canadians during the German Spring Offensive were issued British Lee-Enfields to simplify ammunition supply. The Lee of Lee-Enfield was an American inventor, James Parrish Lee. Enfield is, of course, the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock. And that's today's trivia.

Yeah. I went to a gun show a few months ago (maybe it was a year) and they had No.4's, the WW2 style, in airsoft form. But they were still a lot of money. As inexpensive as the real ones are, you could probably buy an original, and if you wanted to, you could replace the barrel and some of those inner workings with parts from a VSR-10 or some other sniper rifle.

I`ve finally got hold of another bolt action rifle, its a DE M50 so not superb but will hopefully enable me to start making the cheap lookalikey SMLE front end which I did for my MP001.

Yes he was, with the Illinois 33rd later, he started out in the regular army in the signal corp. He was sent to France in late 1916 to learn semphore in French. When the 33rd arrived in France in late 1917 in was transfered back into that unit and met up with his brother and cousin, both in the 33rd.
